Workshop Descriptions

WORKSHOPS for THERAPISTS and COUNSELORS

Summer and Fall 2010

The Healer's Star: Finding Balance in the Helping Professions

To avoid burn-out, it is imperative that each therapist develop a sustainable professional life. The Healer's Star can be a powerful tool for this work. In this experiential workshop, we will focus on the points of the Healer's Star: Love, Law, Knowledge, Liberty and Wisdom, as tools for finding balance as a therapist/counselor, as well as a therapeutic tool for clients.

The Mythology of Psychotherapy: Stories That Speak to Our Work

Psychotherapy is a sacred vocation, the modern version of priests, shamans, and elders. Through symbols and stories, we can express the deep nature of what we do as witnesses to pain and facilitators of change. Using a Jungian approach, we will discuss the Descent of Inanna, The Twelve Wild Swans, and other tales that reflect the unique power and responsibility of therapists.

The Human Star: Connecting to Core When Helping Others

In the healing professions, there is often a pull towards helping others and away from self-care. The Human Star is the source of our vitality and the foundation for the Healer's Star. In this experiential workshop, we will focus on the points of the Human Star: Sex, Pride, Self, Power and Passion. We will expand our understanding of these aspects of self, find balance within each point, and learn to care for ourselves as we care for others.

For information on times, dates, and locations, please call (310)201-2853, (818)258-0069, or send an email to Elizabeth@emalamed.com

SPIRITUALITY WORKSHOPS

Summer 2009

    The  Cherokee Dance of Life

Similar to tai chi, this dance is a sacred movement system that increases energy and connects us to the divine. This dance can be done by those with limited ability.

    The Human’s Star
An energetic and emotional tool to work with five points of the self: Sex, Pride, Self, Power, and Passion. We will unravel the negative meanings placed on these points and allow balance to emerge, within and between the points.

    The Healer’s Star
An energetic and emotional tool that evolves from doing the work of the Human Star. The five points, Love, Law, Knowledge, Liberty, and Wisdom will be explored and brought to balance

Self Integration- Many spiritual systems describe the self as having three components: our "animal" self, our "human" self, and our "divine" self. When all three are aligned and communicating as one, we are more present, more alive, and more completely our true selves. We will learn several techniques of alignment, and see how integration effects our perception of the world.

Unbinding the Self- Many of us carry old pain, guilt, memories and resentments. Traditional purification practices can help relieve us of these burdens. We will discuss and practice several forms of purification, especially the Rite of Unbinding, which allows us to remove negative energy, cleanse it, and return it to ourselves for new uses. (The Self Integration workshop is a prerequisite,or both workshops can be combined)

Awakening to Joy and Healing: Chants and Songs- This is a participatory workshop where we  learn music that simply yet effectively changes consciousness. We open to the magic of our collective voices. Everyone, especially those who think they can't sing, are welcome.

IBP Training Update

I have just finished my second year of Integrative Body Psychotherapy training at the IBP Central Institute in Santa Monica, CA. I have completed the basic training and will move onto advanced work in the fall. Integrative Body Psychotherapy is a dynamic, enlivening approach to counseling that helps people create the most satisfying, joyful lives that they can. Therapists are witnesses, guides, and mentors, not professionals who try to "fix" what is "wrong" in a person. Not only that, but IBP counselors are required to work on their own personal issues, using breath, movement and mindfulness to let go of emotional blocks. I have personally and professionally been transformed by this work. Look here for more information on the therapeutic orientation and the Institute. Enjoy!
